Guidelines for Furnishing Electronic Files

Our high-speed SDSL internet connection allows us swift downloads and uploads of art files.

PDF files accompanying specifications for estimate should be sent to: eric@firstcalpress.com

Artwork files should be sent to: artwork@firstcalpress.com

Note: please include information regarding which programs were used in creating the files. Especially when using non-mainstream programs - (mainstream programs include: Quark Xpress, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Photoshop, Freehand and InDesign)

Here are a few suggestions to help save you money and give the most desirable results:

Software
Our imaging is done on a Post Script Level 3 device (AG-FA:APOGEEX). For best results, your files should be in an accepted layout or graphics program. Word processing programs can give unexpected results when output on this device. If there is no alternative, we will work with you to get the best results possible, but please bear in mind that extra time is likely and can add significant costs to your project. If you have something out of the ordinary, call first: we’re willing to help.

Media
Preferred method is CD or ZIP. If you have an older device please check with us.

Fonts
When sending copies of your fonts with a job, please remember to send both screen and printer fonts. This includes fonts embedded in EPS files. All fonts in EPS files that have not been converted to outlines, must be installed in the system to image properly.

Another tip to keep in mind is that fonts do not always respond to being compressed, so try to avoid this whenever possible.

Avoid the use of TrueType Fonts (TTF) as they produce unpredictable results.

Layout
The document size should be the actual trim size of the piece. Placing smaller artwork on a larger document size results in longer imposition time. Any portion of the art that extends to any edge of the sheet is considered a bleed. Be sure to add .125" beyond the trim. Standard reader spreads give best results for imposing to final film.

Linked Files
All linked files should be included in an editable format. For example, in Freehand files, when you export files, check off "include Freehand file in document". This will allow us to create traps and make last minute changes without having to wait for a new file. Please always check your linked files to make sure they are updated and have the same name that the layout program is looking for.

Changes & Revisions
Once you have received a proof from us and have any changes or revisions, please indicate all changes directly on the proof. We can easily make minor changes and save you some money by not having to re-do any work we have already completed on the original file. If you must furnish us a revised file, please make sure that you have changed the file name so that we can distinguish between the original and revised files. However, keep the original name of any linked files so that the links remain active

FTP
Customers who wish to submit jobs over the Internet but find they have files that are too large (most e-mail applications have size limitations and large files have to be segmented) may find it more convenient to use FTP (file transfer protocol).

Call Rick or Eric for access.

Following these guidelines will allow your project to run smoothly and help avoid any additional costs for extra labor. If possible, all files should be accompanied by a laser proof to verify formatting and accuracy, and a list of all enclosed files. We're always available to answer any questions and are willing to help you with any special considerations.
